Providing an opportunity of a lifetime
PRG partner, Klosterman Baking Company, treats 30 survivors and caregivers to a night at the ballpark
A late September baseball game at Great American Ball Park was just what the doctor ordered for 30 PRG breast and gynecological cancer survivors and caregivers. Klosterman Baking Company, a proud partner of Pink Ribbon Girls and sponsor of the Cincinnati Reds, recognized PRG survivors and caregivers on the field prior to the Red’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers on September 24, 2022.
“These events are important to the survivors because it gives them the chance to participate in a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Chasity Metz, community engagement coordinator for Pink Ribbon Girls Cincinnati/NKY. “Cancer takes so much away from them both personally and financially and this is something that, with the help of our community partners, like Klosterman, we can give back to them.”
Lindsay Hinkle was one of those survivors invited to participate and deliver the game ball. Lindsay has always loved the Reds, but would have never guessed she’d have this kind of opportunity.
Lindsay was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in October 2020. She was 30 years old. She was joined by 15 fellow survivors on the field, including two survivors who went through treatment at the same time she did. Lindsay completed treatment in May 2021.
“It was magical for us to stand together and support each other during happier times,” said Lindsay. “Peer support is crucial as a young cancer survivor. PRG made these connections happen and I’m forever grateful for them.”
However, what made the night most memorable was that her husband was able to join her.
“It’s hard battling cancer, but our caregivers are the real superheroes,” said Lindsay. “My husband balanced normal life while supporting me and taking the best care of me. He doesn’t get nearly the credit he deserves.”
The Hinkels, and all the survivors and caregivers who were invited to attend the game, will forever treasure this memory they were able to share together.
“I have been part of many survivor events in Cincinnati, but this had to be one of the best,” said Chasity. “Both teams made the survivors feel really special and it was overall just a great night.”
