A new perspective on the cancer journey
When Renee King, the Director of Brand Strategy and Marketing for Pink Ribbon Girls explained
the organization’s mission to me, partnering with them to create a video for the Ignite the Fight
event was a no-brainer. It was clear that Pink Ribbon Girls was an organization that had a very
real and meaningful impact on the lives of those it serves. However, I had no idea how real and
impactful that impact was until the day of production.
It was story after story about battling cancer while being a parent, balancing work and life, being
strong for your loved ones and so on. It was emotionally heavy, to say the least. I can’t imagine
going through that. These women were fighting for their lives while still living their lives. Then
each story ended on a positive note about how the support that Pink Ribbon Girls provided
made all of the difference. “Because of Pink Ribbon Girls, I’m here to give someone else hope,”
is how one woman summarized her journey. Another said, “because of Pink Ribbon Girls, I
wasn’t alone at one of the darkest points in my life.” PRG was their rock.
As someone who hasn’t personally been through anything like cancer, it’s hard to fully
appreciate how important it is to have someone who’s there to help, to listen, and to say, “it’s
going to be OK.” While editing the video a few weeks later I realized that because of Pink
Ribbon Girls, I know what “no travels this road alone” truly means. Thank you for the opportunity
to tell that story because it is definitely a story that more people need to hear.
